There is a story that the Lotus arose from the navel of the Hindu God Vishnu. Vishnu, the preserver and protector of creation, is the embodiment of mercy and goodness. Vishnu maintains the cosmic order, or Dharma, and is the deity of Shanti, the peaceful mood. Vishnu is intolerant of Ego. The Lotus is Hinduism's foremost symbol of beauty, prosperity, and fertility. It is said that within each person is the spirit of the sacred lotus, representing eternity, purity, and divinity. Bust of Vishnu on a lotus leaf, hand carved from soapstone.
