About Salish Winds Incense

Making Incense

Salish Winds Incense was born in my kitchen in 1996. But it wasn’t called Salish Winds Incense back then. In fact, it wasn’t called anything; I didn’t have any thoughts of “business” in mind at all. I was just having some fun with a new hobby, fiddling around with essential oils, creating fragrances, and making all kinds of things with those fragrances, including incense.

Soon I was giving my essential oils stuff as gifts to friends and family and, well, one thing led to another. Essential oils stuff was coming out of my ears and so I rented a tent space at the local farmer’s market. It was here where is saw that my incense in particular was the big hit in my line. I had a couple of small shop owners ask about purchasing my incense wholesale for their stores, and that’s when Salish Winds Incense was born. Now, Salish Winds Incense can be found all over the US from Seattle to Boston in small boutiques and large national grocery stores such as Wild Oats and Whole Foods.

Why Salish Winds Incense?

I chose the name Salish Winds Incense because I wanted my incense to embody something of the essence of where it is made. Coast Salish defines a cultural group of indigenous people from southern Washington to central British Columbia. The Coast Salish are composed of many tribes, many language dialects, and famous for their art. The Totem Pole, cedar carved masks, dugout canoe, and the beautiful woven cedar baskets all belong to the Coast Salish. And, one of the men I admire most in American history, Chief Seattle, chief of the Suquamish Tribe, was Salish. I live within the boundaries of the Suquamish Tribe (Port Madison Reservation), where Orca whale, Bald eagles, salmon, cedar forests, mountains, and the deep waters of Puget Sound surround me. This is where I craft this incense for you. My intent is that you might feel the spiritual power and the tremendous natural beauty of this area, that you might feel the “Salish Winds”, when you hold my incense in your hand and burn it in your home. It is a beautiful feeling that can only carry good energy with it.

Peace,
Marta
